The beauty of floral newborn sessions

When I began taking newborn photos, well…a few sessions after, my goal was to be the most creative newborn artist/photographer. I was so inspired to include the natural Alaska elements into each session. Alaska is such a beautifully inspiring state that I wanted to make images that complimented the landscape. My first session with flowers was inspired by Heidi Hope Photography. I just loved that she used flowers in seemingly every session. I loved that she was an artist…like a visual artist. She created her own backdrops and painted the most magical setups. She was impressive.

So, I tried to do the same. See that gallery here. I pulled wild flowers from my yard and worked to create a garden feel. Good thing I had store-bought ones too…because there were tons of bugs crawling everywhere. I tried to kill the bugs by freezing them. But the flowers wilted too badly and I had to remove most of them. I still kept my lilac and fireweed flowers in the session.

Regardless of my first attempt, I still wanted to create. I love the intricacies of little details and sessions that pull several elements into a cohesive image. But there is a threshold where things become too much. After my first year, I began balancing between extensive setups to understanding how poignant simplistic baby-focused images were. I found love in that direction as well as the overly floral ones.

Back then, my posing skills on a beanbag were pretty limited. It resulted in most of my initial clients getting more setups than blanket images. Then there was a period where I actually got really tired of doing the intricate setups, because sessions were jut taking too long. (It’s still a constant battle of pulling myself back from wanting to provide more) But, now, I try to do both. My clients deserve a customized experience. They should get the best I can give them…always!

Happily, I found a new love of floral and printed wraps. With my increased proficiency in wrapping babies, I’ve acquired a TON of wraps. But the floral girly ones…speak to my heart more than anything. They add that delicate element without all the effort. The whole scape of a blanket image becomes immediately more interesting. And somewhere…my original intent of creating, and beautifying a session has returned.
